Mad Honey hunting Expedition in Lamjung Village
Honey hunting has been a tradition for ages among the indigenous Gurung community people residing in Lamjung village, Â Annapurna region. Honey not only possesses psychedelic and medicinal value but it also carries traditional/cultural values that have been passed on from generation to generation. The honey is extracted from giant bees known as the great Apis Laboriosa residing above 3000m altitude in the cliffs of the Himalayas, so we can imagine the difficulty that the people have to go through while harvesting the honey.
Mad Honey Expedition is a great wilderness experience that anyone can join. It’s a mesmerizing view that can be an achievement and a lifetime experience for the people who go on an expedition. Indigenous people climb up the stiff cliffs with the help of a natural ladder made up of bamboo, ropes, and hooks to access the hive, we can see the adrenaline rush among the people excited about hunting. Hunters use smoke flame generated from burning plant leaves to distract the bees while they harvest the honey. The honeycombs extracted are gently transferred to the ground. The honey is extracted by crushing the comb and filtered using a cloth. The honey is then preserved in bamboo or clay pot containers.
Honey hunting is not only a culture but it has been an only source of income for the people residing in the region. We are also supporting a cause as we are helping indigenous people, become independent, continue their tradition that has been passed on from generations and also generate a revenue from it. We are also seeing that their effort is well looked after. The extracted honey is also available worldwide through Mad Honey Store.
